How to Write an Admission Acceptance Letter

You've been accepted to college or graduate school: congratulations! You've put in the work and you're ready to reap the benefits. Before you begin planning for the classes you'll take, you should accept your offer of admission formally. If you don't accept the offer formally, you may be listed as unresponsive and dropped from the admission rolls. The letter and documents are easy to complete, but they require some due diligence on your part.

1 Forms

2 Read Your Letter

Read your acceptance letter thoroughly. It will likely contain the information that you need to know to accept the offer formally.

3 Gather the Required Forms

Locate all the forms that you will need to accept your admission offer formally. If the forms are not listed in the admission letter you received, check the university's website. If you can't locate the information online, call the university's registrar to request the information.

4 Thoroughly Complete All Forms

Carefully and thoroughly review each form for accuracy and completion. If you aren't sure how to complete any part of your forms, check the university's website or contact them for clarification before you submit the documents.

5 Make and Save Copies of Forms

Before you send anything out, make copies of all the forms you completed and save them for your records along with a copy of your cover letter.

6 Letter

7 Address the Letter Appropriately

Universities are large and comprised of many employees and departments, which is why it is so important to address your acceptance letter properly so that it reaches the right people and avoids unnecessary delays. Address the admission acceptance letter to the appropriate person or department. This will likely be whoever or whatever is listed on the admission letter you received.

8 Use a General Opening

If a specific person is listed on the admission letter you received, then you can address your acceptance letter directly to that person. However, if no specific person is listed, begin the letter with a general opening, such as "To whom it may concern."

9 Formally Accept the Admission Offer

Accept the admission offer at the beginning of the body of the letter. It can sound like this: "I am pleased to accept the offer of admission to pursue an undergraduate degree at the University of Wyoming."

10 Identify Additional Documents

List all of the forms and attachments that you are sending along with your acceptance letter. This includes any and all forms that you are required to send. If you have to send a payment along with your acceptance, indicate that you are including said payment with your letter.

11 Conclude the Letter Appropriately

End the letter politely and formally. Express your gratitude for the opportunity by thanking the person or department for accepting you into the program. Include your full name and all of your contact information, including telephone number and e-mail address.

  • Make copies of everything that you send with your acceptance letter for your records.
  • Call after a week or two to ensure that your letter was, indeed, received with all of the appropriate forms and paperwork. Ask if there is anything else that you need to submit to complete your acceptance.
