How to Decorate Long Walls
Some living spaces, such as a grand loft in the city or a modern home with vaulted ceilings, have tons of wall space by design. These long walls provide you with a blank canvas to display your decorating tastes, but they pose a challenge as well. If the wall runs in a continuous line, you may find it hard to visually distinguish between one area of the room and the next. The right decorating tactics can provide that visual divider. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Decide how you will divide the living space according to its various purposes. For example, you may want a hobby area, a dining space and a seating area. The way you decorate the wall in each of these areas will help you visually distinguish the spaces.
-
2
Incorporate color and use different shades of the same basic hue to distinguish the areas but keep the decor cohesive. For a bolder look, use a dark color as an accent wall in the dining area, for example. Plan to incorporate different artwork, decorative sconces and mirrors on each section of wall.

3
Hang your artwork and photographs in visual clusters with several feet of empty space around them. Consider hanging artwork that supports the theme of each space, such as food-themed still lifes in the dining room and family photos in the living area.
-
4
Use room dividers to separate the spaces and break up the long walls. A well-placed free-standing bookcase or divider screen will help give the illusion of "rooms" even if they don't touch the wall. Use differing decorative elements on each side of the divider.
-
5
Incorporate some proportionate art into the mix. Large walls call for a few large pieces. The easiest way to do this is to select one large piece and flank it with two to four smaller ones. This acknowledges the wall's size and keeps the artwork from being dwarfed.
