How to Adjust a Doorknob

Adjust doorknobs to get them working properly.

We've all had to deal with finicky doorknobs that are jiggly and shaky to use. Although seemingly just a slight annoyance, a doorknob that is not adjusted to work correctly can eventually stop working and leave you stuck on the wrong side of the door. Most doorknobs are relatively easy to fix, and require a simple tightening to get them back on track and functioning properly.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Allen wrench

Instructions

1. Loosen the setscrew using a standard screwdriver. The setscrew is the screw that threads through the sleeve of the knob into the interior of the door. In some cases the setscrew my require an Allen wrench, but this is uncommon.

2. Unscrew the knob and reveal the door handle spindle and inside of the setscrew and sleeve on the other side of the knob. Make sure the setscrew on the opposite side is threaded tightly. Tighten it if it's not.

3. Turn the doorknob until one of the spindle's two flat sides is on top. Push the knob toward the door and hold it firmly against the trim while you thread the knob back onto the spindle.

4. When the knob is touching the trim lightly, turn it one way or another until the setscrew aligns with either flat face of the spindle. Screw the setscrew into the doorknob until it is very tight.

5. Make sure the doorknob is working well by testing it out several times. The knob should turn easily, but not in a loose or jiggly manner. If you need to adjust the knob again, repeat the above steps, this time turning the knob more or less onto the spindle.

Tips & Warnings

• Use the appropriate screwdriver size and type for the doorknob setscrew. If you use the incorrect screwdriver size or type you will have trouble adjusting the knob.
