Buy some bridal magazines and look through them for pictures of dresses you may like. Cut out pictures of different aspects of dresses you like such as different neck lines, trim, backs and trains. You can paste these pictures on paper to form one dress design. Save all of your pictures in a folder so you can go back and look at them.

Try on dresses at bridal salons. Take someone with you to take pictures of you wearing different dresses. There will be things you like about a variety of dress designs, and with pictures you can go back later and remember which details appealed to you. This will also help you to see in person what looks good on your body type. You may like something on a hanger or a mannequin but not on yourself.

Combine all your favorite aspects of the dresses you tried on and the dress designs you cut out of the magazines. Using all your pictures, draw the final design on a sketch pad. Draw a few different options such as longer or shorter trains and different sleeve lengths.

Go to a fabric shop and get all the materials you will need including fabric, thread, trim, lining, lace, buttons, sequins and embellishments. Be sure to get some extra material in case you make a mistake.

Make a pattern for your dress. It may help to find a similar pattern and use that as a rough draft. You can add to it or take away from it as needed. Make sure you have a pattern that is the correct size. Cut your material and use pins to hold it in place. Try the pinned dress on before you do any sewing in case any changes need to be made.
If you don't have your own sewing machine or you don't know how to sew, find dressmakers in the phone book or online who can use the material, your sketch and the pattern to create the dress for you.
