How to Find a Good Bankruptcy Lawyer
Bankruptcy is a serious, life-altering event that can affect you financially for up to a decade. Since bankruptcy law specifics vary from state to state, hiring a bankruptcy lawyer is usually recommended. However, finding a good bankruptcy lawyer is just as difficult as finding a doctor you like, and referrals from friends and family are not always helpful unless they went through bankruptcy themselves. Instead, look for a good bankruptcy attorney by focusing on experience, continued training and involvement, as well as how well she or he pays attention to what you need specifically.

1
Search online for local bankruptcy attorneys through reputable associations' websites like the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the American Bankruptcy Institute. Certification is required to be listed by the ABI, and membership to the NACBA requires annual conferences and training seminars. Write down the names and phone numbers of attorneys listed on the websites, though preferably they should be listed on both sites.
-
2
Make an appointment with several of the attorneys and prepare a list of questions for your interview. Common questions revolve around the attorney's years of experience in the field, if the legal practice revolves around consumer or business bankruptcy, how many bankruptcies are represented by the firm in a year and who specifically will be representing you during the proceedings.

Meet with the lawyers. Note if the lawyer's office is neat and tidy, if he listens to what you have to say and if he offers personalized advice for your specific circumstances. Ask the questions on your list and write down notes on the answers. Ask if he sits on a bankruptcy court panel or creditor committees, which indicates not only a deep understanding of bankruptcy but a serious passion for the job, according to MSN Money. Ask about the lawyer's fees, what is included in those fees, how payments are handled and when they are due. Note all the answers on your paperwork.

4
Review your notes from the various interviews at home. You should choose an attorney who has experience, is respected in the field, organized, listens to you, provides individualized legal advice and charges reasonable fees. Select the lawyer that best suits these qualities and provides a reasonable time frame for your bankruptcy process.

Call the lawyer your have selected and hire the firm to handle your bankruptcy.
