How to Protect a Mattress While Moving

Moving is a difficult process, but it can be hard on furniture pieces such as mattress. Mattresses are heavy and unwieldy, often making moving an awkward process. Since they usually cost a considerable sum and cannot be exchanged after a period of time, you need to move them carefully to avoid damage. With a few protective steps, your mattress can arrive at your new location clean as well as intact.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic mattress bag
  • Mattress box
  • Remove the pillows and strip the bedding from the mattress. Also remove any mattress covers.

  • Place the mattress in a plastic mattress bag to protect the surfaces. You can obtain a mattress bag from a moving supply company. If you would like to avoid the cost, you can wrap the mattress in old blankets, bedsheets or tarps.

  • Stand the mattress on its side and slide it into a mattress box, also available from a moving supply company.

  • Lay the mattress flat during the move, if possible. This is especially important for mattresses with soft tops, like pillow-top mattresses, if you are driving a long distance.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're storing a mattress, keep it upright--between pieces of furniture, for example--not leaning against the side of a storage container or wall.
