Moving is a difficult process, but it can be hard on furniture pieces such as mattress. Mattresses are heavy and unwieldy, often making moving an awkward process. Since they usually cost a considerable sum and cannot be exchanged after a period of time, you need to move them carefully to avoid damage. With a few protective steps, your mattress can arrive at your new location clean as well as intact.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic mattress bag
- Mattress box
Remove the pillows and strip the bedding from the mattress. Also remove any mattress covers.
Place the mattress in a plastic mattress bag to protect the surfaces. You can obtain a mattress bag from a moving supply company. If you would like to avoid the cost, you can wrap the mattress in old blankets, bedsheets or tarps.
Stand the mattress on its side and slide it into a mattress box, also available from a moving supply company.
Lay the mattress flat during the move, if possible. This is especially important for mattresses with soft tops, like pillow-top mattresses, if you are driving a long distance.
Tips & Warnings
- If you're storing a mattress, keep it upright--between pieces of furniture, for example--not leaning against the side of a storage container or wall.
