Spanish, with approximately 329 million speakers, is one of the world's major languages. Spanish speakers can be found not only in Spain, but in Latin American countries such as Chile, Peru and Mexico. There is also a significant Spanish-speaking community in the United States. Learning Spanish can help you progress in your career or enable you to communicate more freely with Spanish-speaking friends and neighbors who have limited English. Learning some sentences in Spanish is the first step, and there are many ways to do this free of charge on the Internet.

Identify the sentences that you want to learn in Spanish. If you intend to travel to a Spanish-speaking country, you should focus on learning sentences that will be useful in a tourist environment. If you need to use Spanish sentences at work, your focus will be different. Deciding what you want to learn at an early stage will help you focus your learning efforts more effectively.

Search for Spanish translations of your sentences on the Internet. Websites such as Omniglot provide lists of useful Spanish phrases such as "Hello," "How are you?" and "I don't understand." Other websites, such as Fodor's, provide lists of phrases that are more suited to specific situations; for example, ordering in a restaurant.

Print out the Spanish sentences you wish to learn, along with their English translations. Read the sentences out loud to yourself until you are happy with your pronunciation. Copy the sentences in your own handwriting, as this will help to reinforce them in your brain.

Make flashcards of the Spanish sentences. Write the Spanish sentence on one side of a piece of paper and write the English translation on the opposite side. Practice looking at the Spanish sentence and saying the English translation aloud. Then turn the cards around and practice saying the Spanish sentence from the English translation.
