How to Tow a Maximum Size Caravan
Towing a maximum sized caravan requires a tow vehicle capable of this task. Understanding the towing capacity of the tow vehicle and working within this limitation is important for safety. The weight of the caravan reduces the braking and handling characteristics of the tow vehicle. Towing a large caravan requires some experience. Practice in a vacant parking lot, or on a quiet country road, until comfortable with adjusting your driving style. Connecting the caravan properly to the vehicle is the first step.

1
Determine the weight of the caravan by looking on the data plate which is fastened to the frame, which lists under gross trailer weight (GTW).
-
2
Look in the owner's manual for the towing capacity of the tow vehicle. The weight of the caravan must be less than the towing capacity for safe operation.
-
-
3
Lower the caravan's coupler onto the tow vehicle's hitch by lowering the screw jack mounted on the trailer's tongue. Turn the handle on the screw jack counterclockwise to lower it.
-
4
Lock the coupler in place by lowering the latch and fastening with a hitch pin through the latch.
-
5
Connect the caravan's electrical plug to the vehicle's electrical receiver by pushing the two together.
-
6
Fasten the caravan's right chain to the left side of the hitch and the left chain to the right side of the hitch.
-
7
Walk around the vehicle and caravan inspecting the tires for proper inflation and double checking the connections.
-
8
Drive slower than normal and give yourself a significant amount of additional braking space to compensate for the reduced performance of the tow vehicle.
-
9
Take corners slower and wider while maintaining your lane. A long caravan has a tendency to cut the inside of corners and ride up on the curb.
