Start out with the bride and groom's names at the top of the engagement invitation. It is important for your guests to know who is making the big announcement right from the start. For example, "Bobby Jones and Rena Bloom invite you..." If the bride or groom's parents are throwing the engagement party, it is proper etiquette to put the parents' names at the top of the invitation, so that it reads "Mr. and Mrs. Jones cordially invite you..."

2
Announce the engagement by writing on the invitation that the guests are invited to an engagement party. The sentence should read something like, "You are invited to an engagement party for the engagement of..." A more casual phrasing for an engagement invitation may read, "We got engaged! Come celebrate with us."

Include information about when and where the party will take place. Give an exact location, date and time so that guests can make accommodations. Keep in mind that some people may want to come for your party from out of town, so the more notice they have about your party, the better the chances that they can attend. According to The Knot, it is ideal to send out engagement invitations four to six weeks in advance for out of town guests.

4
Use a poem to announce your engagement, if you and your fiance are the poetic type. For example, "He popped the question, we'll say 'I do' ... we'd love to celebrate our engagement with you!"
-
5
Include contact information on the invitation so that guests can RSVP. A full name, phone number and email address is ideal.
-
6
Add information that will help the guests know what type of party you are throwing. For instance, if your engagement party is during the summer and you plan on throwing a pool party, write on the invitation that guests should bring a swimsuit and sunscreen. If you are having a formal engagement party, indicate that on the invitation so guests do not show up underdressed.
