How to Make a Poinsettia With a Daisy Punch

Punchart is the craft of making images from punched paper pieces. Create a poinsettia blossom with the punched paper shapes, or punchies, using a daisy-shaped punch tool. Punchart shapes work well as embellishments for handmade greeting cards, gift tags, Christmas crafts and scrapbook layouts. The sturdiest poinsettia blossoms are made from card stock. Make dainty flat poinsettia blossoms with a 1/2-inch daisy shape or large layered card stock flowers with a set of 1/2 inch to 4-inch punch tools.

Things You'll Need

• Small, medium and large daisy punch tools
• Red and green paper, card stock or glitter card stock
• Thick mouse pad
• Embossing tool
• Glue pen
• Wax or freezer paper
• Yellow paper or round yellow brads
• Hole punch

Instructions

Dimensional Poinsettia

1. Punch a small, medium and large daisy shape from paper or card stock. Punch a green daisy with the large punch from the same type of paper.

2. Place a punched daisy shape or punchie on to a clean mouse pad.

3. Make a straight vertical line down the center of each red leaf with an embossing stylus. Use a metal ruler to keep the leaf in place and the line even. Keep in mind that the true flower of the poinsettia is the series of yellow and green circles at the center of the red leaf cluster.

4. Make angled lines with the stylus on either side of the center line for a more detailed poinsettia flower leaf. Turn the leaf over to show the full effect of the embossed markings.

5. Secure the medium-size daisy to the largest daisy shape with glue from a permanent adhesive glue pen. Glue the center and leave the leaves free for a more dimensional flower. Turn the shape to create a multi-leaf-petal effect. Adhere the small daisy shape to the center of the poinsettia.

6. Cut alternating petals from the large green daisy shape to create leaves. Emboss each leaf with vertical and horizontal lines. Glue the leaves to the poinsettia flower side.

7. Punch small yellow circles and adhere them to the red leaf cluster center. Outline the yellow circles with a red, black or green fine-point ink pen. Punch tiny holes into the center of the leaf clusters and insert miniature round yellow brads as a dimensional alternative to paper punchie flowers.

Flat Poinsettia

1. Punch out two or three daisy shapes from red, white, cream or pink paper. Choose glittered card stock for a more ornate greeting card embellishment.

2. Glue the centers of the flower shapes in a stack, one upon the other. Turn the shapes to get the largest number of petals to show from one layer to the next.

3. Punch out small, round, yellow shapes. Glue the shapes to the center of the colored daisy shapes. If you used 1/2-inch daisy shapes, use the 1/8-inch hole punch for the center yellow flowers.

4. Punch holes in the colored daisies and secure the shapes together with small, flat, decorative brads instead of adhesive.

5. Punch out a green daisy shape. Cut the green daisy in two and adhere the pieces on either side of the flat, colored poinsettia leaves.

Tips & Warnings

• Add further details to the poinsettia flowers by outlining the colored leaves with ink pens. Shadow the leaves with scrapbooking chalks.
