How to Paint a Yurt
The nomadic peoples of Central Asia developed a highly portable circular structure called a yurt. Spread by Genghis Khan's conquests in the 13th and 14th centuries, the yurt consisted of a latticework frame covered with reed or felt walls. The durability and weather resistance of its low-impact design makes the yurt a popular inspiration for ecologically friendly buildings. Modern yurts serve a number of purposes, from camping and temporary housing to rural retreats or spa enclosures. No matter how you use your yurt, painting it allows you to personalize its interior. 1
Determine what surfaces you want to paint. Yurts usually have exposed wooden latticework and support rafters; however, some might have more elaborate wooden features. Decide how much of the woodwork in the yurt you want painted.
-
2
Estimate the surface area of the woodwork that you want painted. Multiply the height of the yurt by the circumference. Find the circumference by multiplying the diameter by pi, rounded to 3.14.

3
Select the paint color. Try a few different swatches and match the color against the decorations and colors that will be in the room. Purchase enough paint in your selected color to cover the woodwork with at least two coats.
-
4
Move all furniture and decorations to the center of the yurt and cover them with a drop cloth. Remove the fabric walls if the weather allows. Paint each surface of the latticework with as thin a layer of paint as possible to avoid drips and clumps. Add a second or third coat, as necessary, to completely cover the woodwork.
-
5
Follow the paint brand's instructions on the length of time to allow the paint to dry before replacing any decorations or furniture. Sand down any clumps or clots with high-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
