How to Hire an Inexpensive Typist
Spending eight hours a day in front of a computer screen doesn't necessarily turn someone into a good typist. Some folks are faster and more efficient on a computer keyboard than others. If you're a great creative writer but a lousy typist, hire someone to turn your error-laden manuscript into a presentable book or report. Depending on the size of your typing project and how quickly you need the final copy, there are many available options, from hiring a local business student to working with a virtual assistant.

1
Decide exactly what you want typed, the deadline for the project and your budget. If you have a proofed copy of a business report and need someone to produce a presentable version for a conference the next day, be sure to mention that in your ad and include a phrase like "24-hour turnaround needed." This will cut down on the number of unsuitable replies you receive.

2
Contact nearby community colleges or business schools. Students are always eager to make extra money and will usually work for lower wages than secretarial service typists. Place an ad in the college paper or tack a flyer in stores or cafes close to the campus.

Post an ad in the Craigslist (craigslist.org) 'Jobs' or 'Gigs' section for your city. Select the 'Jobs' section for long-term projects, such as weekly reports or typings a book manuscript. Use the 'Gigs' section for short projects like one-time reports or term papers. If you're willing to work with a typist from another city or region, mention this in the title of your ad. This is a good way to increase the number of qualified applicants. You can also look under the 'Write/Edit/Translate' section of 'Services Offered' to locate typists who have placed ads.

Visit work at home or telecommute websites. People who are willing to work with typists without an in-person consultation can visit the Work at Home Moms (WAHM.com) or Virtual Assistant Forums (virtualassistantforums.com) websites or other sites that offer remote typing and office services. Since typists from all over the world advertise on these websites, rates offered will fluctuate according to region.

Speak to local secretarial services. These businesses are usually listed under word processing, transcription or typing services. While many of them are one-person operations, some employ several typists, especially in downtown areas near courthouses and law firms. A secretarial service offers fast, professional work. These businesses tend to charge more, but you may be able to negotiate a good price.
