How to Space Stencils

How to Space Stencils thumbnail
Spacing stencils evenly leaves a professional look.

A stenciling project can be an easy way to add a bit of embellishment to walls, clothing, poster boards and many other types of decorative or signage items. While stencils do solve problems with consistency in repeated images or text font, the stencils are not completely fool proof. The most important tasks in stenciling, positioning and spacing, must be done carefully for an attractive and even finished result. Luckily, a couple of common drawing tools can help you position your stencils with even spaces between them.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the letter or image stencils you are using. This is the distance that should be placed between each stencil for an even and professional look.

    • 2

With a pencil, trace the first stencil onto the surface you are stenciling.

    • 3

Measure from the edge of the stencil outward, in the direction of where you need to place the next stencil. Place the next stencil as far away from the edge as your previous width measurement.

    • 4

Continue measuring and placing the stencils the same distance from each other until you have all of them traced.
