Bond with your kids over painting activities.

The Crayola company is known for producing a wide range of quality art supplies that are suitable for children to use. Crayola acrylic paint is available in a range of intense colors that are permanent, water-resistant and versatile. If you prefer something less permanent, Crayola washable finger paint can be easily washed off skin and out of the majority of fabrics. If very young children will be painting, give them washable paints.

Instructions

  1. Acrylic Paint

    • 1

Load a flat watercolor brush with acrylic paint. Apply even strokes to paper and build up a thick edge around the color. Let each color dry before applying a different color. If you want your colors to blend together, lightly stroke a damp paintbrush across the wet paint or dampen the paper before painting. Paint one long stroke of one color, then paint a lighter or darker color along its edge to create a subtle shadow.

    • 2

Dip the tip of your brush handle into acrylic paint. Create fine dots or lines over a dry, previously painted surface by pressing or dragging the painted handle tip on the paper. Use a deeper color for the brush handle for best results.

    • 3

Draw thick lines or shapes with crayons. Cover them with paint and wait for the waxy crayon to rise through the painted surface. Thin the acrylic paint with water to experiment with different effects. Draw with crayons on heavy paper such as recycled brown parcel paper. Cover most of the paper with crayon. Thin the black acrylic paint with a little water, then brush over a small section of the paper. Wipe it off immediately with a paper towel. Polish the section with a tissue. Repeat for the rest of the paper to achieve an antique look.

    Washable Finger Paint

    • 4

Squeeze a generous amount of finger paint into a finger paint dip bowl or onto a palette. Dip bowls are good for keeping colors separate if young children will be painting.

    • 5

Dip your thumb and finger pads into the paint so that the color adheres to the skin. Press the painted skin onto paper in different patterns to create waves and wiggles. Apply the paint to different parts of the hands and arms and press them onto the paper to add bigger shapes and create people and animals.

    • 6

Scratch the wet paint with your fingertips and nails to create texture. Use other items, such as combs, sponges, sticks, leaves and cotton swabs, to make a variety of interesting textures.

    • 7

Use a small paintbrush dipped in finger paint to paint each finger and fingertip a different color. Paint your palm blue and green. Press your entire hand firmly down on to the paper. Move your hand in a circle, trying to keep the heel of your hand in roughly the same spot. Keep pressing your hand as you go until you have created a blue and green earth shape with lots of multicolored people around it.
