How to Patch Major Vinyl Pool Leaks
Vinyl-liner swimming pools utilize a sheet of plastic vinyl liner to hold the water inside the pool. Swimming pool vinyl material faces numerous outside forces that can stretch, tear and otherwise damage the liner. Sharp-edged toys or objects left inside the pool cause tears or other damage to the liner which can grow into a major leak. Locate and measure the tear, hole or other damaged section of the vinyl pool liner. Cut a section out of a vinyl patch sheet that measures slightly larger than the damaged section.

Swab a thick coat of waterproof or water-resistant vinyl adhesive onto one side of the vinyl patch sheet. Both water-resistant and waterproof vinyl adhesives come in vinyl patch kits.

Push the sheet of patch material up against the damaged section of the liner with the adhesive-coated side touching the pool. Hold the sheet against the liner for 30 seconds to allow the adhesive to adhere to the pool.

Tips & Warnings
Keep swimmers out of the pool for a few days after the patch is applied to avoid any further damage to the liner.
