How to Obtain a Defense Lawyer
Having a good defense lawyer is important when charged with a crime or facing a serious civil matter, such as a lawsuit. Defense lawyers protect your legal rights and possibly prevent you from going to jail or having to pay money because of a lawsuit. People have the right to defend themselves in criminal and legal matters, but obtaining an experienced attorney is almost always a better choice. It is possible to hire an attorney in just a few hours, but taking time for proper research is best.

1
Call the local office for legal aid in your community -- or a similar nonprofit organization offering free legal services. The public library or a charity such as the Salvation Army can provide the number. Legal aid organizations offer free attorneys for some low-income people. People who do not qualify are eligible for free advice on how to find a local attorney through other means. Ask about options available to you based on your situation.

2
Ask to be assigned a free public defender if you are charged with a crime. County governments provide attorneys for people who are unable to pay. Call your county sheriff's department to ask about receiving a public defender. Public defenders are not available to defend lawsuits or other civil matters.

Contact a lawyer referral service certified by the state bar association in your state. Organizations such as The State Bar of California maintain lists of reputable attorney referral services. Get a contact number for your local state bar by contacting the public library. Then call the bar to obtain numbers for lawyer referral services.

Review attorneys listed with a referral service. Ask for free consultations with a few firms before making a choice. Agree on costs and hire the attorney.
