Regardless of whether your passport application was submitted in person at an approved passport acceptance facility, processed through a third-party site or handled as a standard renewal mailed directly to the U.S. Department of State, you are able to track the status of your application online. Allow ample time for the receipt of your application before beginning.

Things You'll Need

  • Social security number
  • Date of birth

Visit the U.S. Department of State U.S. Passport Application Status page.

Read the Department of State's Privacy and Computer Fraud and Abuse Acts Notices and Disclaimers. It contains important information regarding copyright infringement and other policies governing the use of information found on the page. Once you’ve reviewed the information, click the confirmation box indicating that you’ve read the Privacy and Computer Fraud and Abuse Acts Notices and Disclaimers.

Click submit. On the next page you will be prompted to enter your last name, date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number. This information must match the information submitted on your passport application. Afterwards, select submit.

Read the status of your application, if available. If you have a message indicating that your application was not found, check back in a few days. Even for expedited and overnight services, it routinely takes 7 to 10 days to process an application.

Submit your email address below the message indicating that your passport was not found, if applicable. This way, the Department of State will contact you directly when they have information concerning your application.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have not received your passport within two weeks of your departure, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 for assistance. Alternatively, you can contact them by email for further instruction. However, it is recommended that any traveler expecting to depart within 48-72 hours call, as the typical email response time is 2 to 4 days.
  • The U.S. Department of State will not display the returns for any search which yields more than one result. So, should there be a search carried out with a common surname, such as Smith, Jones or Hernandez, and the last four of the social and the date of birth are identical, then the message indicating that there is no record will be displayed. Should you suspect this is the case return at a later date to check the status of your application. If, at two weeks prior to your travel date you have still not received your passport and you continue to receive the error, contact the National Passport Information Center for assistance.
