You have the boots, the belt and the shield. All you need is the cape, and your Superman costume is ready. Use any red fabric you can find at your local craft stores to make the cape. You can even use an old red tablecloth or bed sheet. Measure the size of the cape and attach the cape to the costume or tie it over the shoulders. When you are finished with the cape, you will have all the elements you need for a mighty Superman costume.
Things You'll Need
- Red fabric
- Measuring tape
- Sewing chalk
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Needle and thread
- Ribbon (optional)
Measure the width you need the top of the cape to be. Measure across back of the neck of your costume. The traditional Superman cape is attached to the rest of the costume from here. Add 1/2 inch to the measurement. This will be your hem.
Measure the length you need the cape to be. Do not let the cape hang too long, because the person could trip on it. Have it fall about 2 inches above the ground. Add 1/2 inch to this measurement.
Put the fabric on your work surface. Mark the measurement for the top of the cape. From both ends of the measurement measure downward at 45 degrees until you reach the desired length of the cape. You can adjust the measurement to make the cape wider. Do not forget to add 1/2 inch for the hem. Mark the length with sewing chalk.
Make sure you have added 1/2 inch to all sides for the hem. Cut along the chalk lines. Fold the sides over 1/2 inch and secure with pins.
Sew the hem.
Place the top of the cape inside the neck of the costume no more than 1/2 inch. Otherwise, the cape will be shorter than the length for which you measured.
Attach the cape to the costume using needle and thread.
Tips & Warnings
- If you do not want the cape to be sewn into the costume, cut two strips of 1/2-inch or 1/4-inch ribbon. Attach the strips to the top corners of the fabric so you can tie the cape over your shoulders.
