If you want to recycle your old digital video recorder (DVR), you have a several options to choose from -- including taking it to a local recycling center, donating it or trading it in for a newer model.

      Visit the Earth 911 website, which features a search engine for finding recycling centers and businesses in your area that will accept and properly dispose of your old DVR (See References). In the search bar, enter "Electronics," as well as your ZIP code or the name of your city, and click "Search." Using the search results, contact nearby recycling centers to find out when they are open and whether they charge anything for recycling DVRs.

      Contact your satellite or cable company if you got your DVR through them. Some companies, such as DirecTV and Dish Network, allow customers to trade in old DVRs for newer models at little or no cost. If you're switching cable or satellite providers, your new provider also may take the DVR from your old provider and recycle it for free.

      If the DVR is still functioning properly, you can give it to a friend or family member who might use it. You also have the option of donating the DVR to an organization or charity, such as a summer camp, group home or women's shelter.
