How to Install Heated Electrical Tape
Heated electrical tape is used to prevent incoming water pipes from freezing, especially in mobile homes. Two types of heated electrical tape are available: one is flat and covered in rubber and the other is round and covered in silver braiding. The flat, rubber-coated type is installed along one side of the pipe and the silver braided type is wound around the pipe. Make sure that the type you choose is appropriate for the type of pipe, either PVC or copper, you will be installing it on. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Utility knife
- Tape measure
- Manufacturer's approved tape
- Waterline insulation
- Vapor barrier
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove the old insulation and heat tape with a utility knife if necessary. Check the water pipe for leaks, including at each joint.
-
2
Measure the distance of the pipe that you want to install heat tape on to determine how much heated electrical tape to buy. Add additional length if the heat tape must be wound around the pipe.
-
-
3
Place the plug end of the heated electrical tape near the outlet it will be plugged in to. Only plug the heated electrical tape into a GFCI outlet. Run the heat tape along the pipe or wrap it around the pipe, depending on the type. Check the manufacturer's instructions for exact placement.
-
4
Attach the heated electrical tape to the waterline using appropriate tape. Some high-grade electrical tapes are approved by heat tape manufacturers, but check the instructions to make sure that you are using an approved tape.
-
5
Wrap the waterline in insulation and vapor barrier. Do not pull the insulation and vapor barrier too tight. Use an approved insulation and vapor barrier to prevent fire from overheated insulation.
-
6
Plug in the heat tape when the weather is cold enough to freeze unprotected pipes.

Tips & Warnings
Some types of heat tape cannot overlap itself. Check the manufacturer's instructions and install accordingly.
Do not attach the heat tape to the waterline too tightly. Keep the attaching tape snug, but not tight.
Do not crimp the heated electrical tape around a corner. This may cause the tape to short out and cause a fire.
Do not plug in the heated electrical tape if there is no water in the waterlines. This may cause damage to your pipes because of overheating.
