How to Use Food Coloring to Decorate Cookies
Food coloring is a part of cookie decorating that is often taken for granted, especially with the availability of decorating tubes and pens. Decorating with food coloring doesn't have to be a hair-pulling experience, however. Divide the icing into separate containers. Use one container per color desired.

Add food coloring to the icing and mix it thoroughly. It is better to add a small amount of color and repeat until the icing reaches the desired color.

Spread a thin layer of icing on the cookie. Allow time for the icing to dry before moving on to the next step.

Paint designs on the cookie using a paintbrush dipped in food coloring. Liquid food coloring can be used as-is, but the paste form should be diluted with water before applying.

Tips & Warnings
Mix a few drops of food coloring with an egg yolk to make a cookie paint that can be applied to the cookie before baking. For a unique look, try piping colored cookie dough onto the cookies before putting them in the oven.
