Food coloring is a part of cookie decorating that is often taken for granted, especially with the availability of decorating tubes and pens. Decorating with food coloring doesn't have to be a hair-pulling experience, however. Whether the cookies are for birthdays, holidays or "just because," decorating with food coloring is fun and easy for all ages. Does this Spark an idea?

      Divide the icing into separate containers. Use one container per color desired.

      Add food coloring to the icing and mix it thoroughly. It is better to add a small amount of color and repeat until the icing reaches the desired color.

      Spread a thin layer of icing on the cookie. Allow time for the icing to dry before moving on to the next step.

      Paint designs on the cookie using a paintbrush dipped in food coloring. Liquid food coloring can be used as-is, but the paste form should be diluted with water before applying.

  • Mix a few drops of food coloring with an egg yolk to make a cookie paint that can be applied to the cookie before baking. For a unique look, try piping colored cookie dough onto the cookies before putting them in the oven.
