Washing Wool Blankets
-
1
Fill a large utility sink or a bathtub with cool or lukewarm water and a small amount of gentle cleanser meant for wool. Submerge the blanket in the water and allow to sit for at least 15 minutes, longer if the blanket is heavily soiled.
-
2
Empty the sink or bathtub and refill with cool, clear water. Allow the blanket to sit again for a few minutes. Repeat this rinsing stage if necessary.
-
-
3
Drain the water again and gently wring the blanket. If possible, lay the blanket outside on a sunny day to dry. Another option is to place clean towels on the floor and lay the blanket on top of the towels to air dry.
Storing Wool Blankets
-
4
Wash wool blankets before putting them away for the year. Fold and store wool blankets in a container like a cedar storage box or plastic storage tub with a lid to keep out moths and other pests.
-
5
Add moth balls to the box as extra insurance against insects and pests. Place the moth balls in a small satchel or envelope to avoid direct contact with the wool blanket, and handle them with care as moth balls are toxic.
-
6
Store the box or container with the blanket in a dry place, preferably within the house rather than in a basement or garage to avoid moisture from getting in.

Tips & Warnings
Some washing machines have a gentle setting for washing wool. If you choose to machine wash your wool blanket, use the cold water and low agitation settings as well as detergent meant for wool garments.
Dry clean your wool blanket if the idea of washing it yourself makes you nervous.
Some wool blankets have been treated to be superwash. However, some superwash yarn may still shrink so use the cold water setting to machine wash and allow to drip dry. Do not put the blanket in the dryer.
Be careful not to use hot water when washing a wool blanket; and do not agitate the blanket more than necessary while submerged in water as this can cause the wool to felt.
