Knit Dish Rag Directions

Knit Dish Rag Directions thumbnail
A handknit dishcloth can do the work of a sponge and a washcloth all in one.

If you can make your own dishcloths, you can use them for a variety of purposes. Hand-knit dishcloths have the capacity to scrub dishes and counters more efficiently than commercial terrycloth washcloths do. Knit up several dishcloths and give them as a gift for a housewarming party or a hostess gift. Keep several on hand and they'll always be ready for any occasion, and soon you'll get custom orders from all your friends and family members.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on 40 stitches using worsted weight cotton yarn and size US 8 needles. The type of cast on does not matter; choose the style that is the most comfortable for you.

    • 2

Knit the first row. Follow the seed stitch pattern: knit one, purl one and repeat this across the row.

    • 3

Knit the second row. Purl one, knit one across the row to complete the seed stitch pattern.

    • 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the dishcloth is as tall as it is wide; in other words, it should be a square when you finish.

    • 5

Bind off all stitches. Cut your working yarn and use a large eye blunt needle to weave in the loose yarn tails at the beginning and the end of your work.

Tips & Warnings
