1
Turn the faucet on for the water to flow. Some sinks have two taps, one marked "Hot" or colored with a red mark and one marked "Cold" or colored blue. Other sinks have a faucet with a lever that you must push to the left for hot water and to the right for cold water.

2
Turn both taps on if you would like warm water, instead of hot or cold, and adjust the taps until the water is as warm as you wish. If your sink has a faucet with one lever, then bring the lever to the middle of the faucet for warm water. Return the taps or lever to the original position to turn the faucet off.

Close the drain if you need to collect water in the sink. Some sinks have attached stoppers that you can push down to block the drain and trap the water. The stopper is then pulled up to open the drain and release the water. Older sinks usually require rubber drain stoppers that you can obtain from a store. Note that most sinks have a drain hole close to the top to prevent the sink from overflowing.

4
Clean the sink regularly to keep it generally hygienic and free of mildew. You can use commercial cleaning products or a homemade cleaner.
