  • Colored buttercream icing
  • Icing knife

      Scoop 1/4 cup of colored buttercream icing onto opposite sides of the cake. Use a light pink or chocolate brown color icing for authenticity.

      Spread the icing around the surface of the doughnut cake with a cake knife. Make sure the cake knife does not touch the surface of the cake, as it can pick up crumbs and mar the surface of the frosting.

      Add more icing. Scoop icing 1/4 cup at a time and smooth over the surface of the cake. Do not ice the inside of the hole or along the sides of the cake. There should be a thick layer of icing on top of the cake.

      Dip the icing knife in a bowl of hot water and dry it quickly with paper towels. Glide the hot knife over the surface of the cake to smooth the icing. Repeat the process, dipping the knife in the water, drying it and then using it to create a flat surface with the icing.

      Sprinkle multicolored or brown candy sprinkles immediately over the iced surface. Gently pat the sprinkles into place with your finger. Allow the icing to form a crust by letting it rest for 15 minutes before storing or serving.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of a smooth frosting, create a sculpted look by moving the icing knife into "S" shapes across the surface of the frosting.
