How to Load a Mod in Quake 4
Modifications, or "mods," allow you to add new functionality to your game of Quake 4. You can add new maps, weapons or even styles of game-play. After you've downloaded a mod, installing it is just a matter of putting it in the right place for Quake 4 to discover it and load the files into memory.
Instructions

1
Open the mod's installation file by double-clicking it. If it's a compressed archive, extract the files to a new folder inside your Quake 4 directory (by default, located in "C:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\"). If it is a self-extracting ".exe" file, follow the instructions to install it to your Quake 4 directory.

2
Locate the Quake 4 icon in the "Quake 4" section of the Windows Start Menu (or find it under "Games") and click on it to start Quake 4. Wait for the opening videos to finish; if you're feeling impatient, the "ESC" key will let you skip them. When the videos have finished loading, you'll be presented with Quake 4's main menu.

3
Click on "MODS" -- it's the menu option at the very bottom left of the screen, beneath "SETTINGS." This brings up a browser that allows you to view the available mods you have installed for Quake 4.

Select the mod you wish to load by clicking on it, and then click "LOAD MOD." Quake 4 will now handle everything involved in installing and running the modification.

Tips & Warnings
If the modification you wish to use has specific instructions, follow those exactly. Although setting up modifications for use with Quake 4 is straightforward, certain modifications might need changes that the Quake 4 programmers didn't plan for.
