How to Add a Trailer Hook for Your Spinnerbait

Used to supplement a lure's main hook, a trailer hook is designed to trail slightly behind the bait or lure. Many anglers use trailer hooks, also known as stinger hooks, with spinnerbaits when fishing for bass and other freshwater game fish. Typically smaller in size than the main hook of the spinnerbait, trailer hooks are available in both black and red and, when properly rigged, increase the potential for successfully hooking and landing a fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a spinnerbait so that its hook is easily accessible.

    • 2

Choose a trailer, or stinger, hook that is one size smaller than the hook on the spinnerbait. Use a 1/0 size trailer hook with a spinnerbait that has a 2/0 size hook, for example.

    • 3

Position the trailer hook so the hook is pointed in the same direction as the spinnerbait hook.

    • 4

Insert the point of the hook attached to the spinnerbait through the eye of the trailer hook. Slide the eye of the trailer hook down onto the bend of the spinnerbait hook.

    • 5

Cut a small, 1/4-inch square from a thick rubber band with a pair of scissors. Insert the point of the spinnerbait hook through the center of the rubber band square. Slide the square down onto the bend of the hook to hold the trailer hook in place and prevent it from coming off the spinnerbait hook while fishing.
