A free program can tell you who visited your website and when.

Monitoring the visitors to your website is a vital part of learning how well your website is performing and how you can improve it. You can identify visitors through information such as IP addresses, geographical location and referring URLs. With administrator access to the control panel or HTML code of your site, you can install any of several free hit counters to gain access to these statistics and find out who is viewing your website.

Instructions

  1. Site Meter

      Go to the Site Meter website, and click "Sign Up."

      Click "Sign Up" next to "Site Meter Basic Free."

      Enter your website's address, or URL, its name and a codename for login, and select your time zone from the drop-down menu, and then click "Next."

      Enter your email address, title, zip code, country, email preferences and gender, and then click "Next."

      Review your information, and click "Next" to complete your registration. Site Meter will send your user name and password to your email account.

      Click "Manager," and select "HTML Code" from the menu.

      Right-click anywhere in the JavaScript or regular HTML box, and click "Select All," then right-click again, and select "Copy."

      Log in to the control panel or HTML code of your website, right-click wherever you want to insert the code, select "Paste," and then publish your website. Site Meter will record activity on any page containing the code.

      Log in to Site Meter at any time, and click "Statistics" to view visitor numbers, IP addresses, geographical location and information on what URLs they came from to find your site.

    StatCounter

      Go to the StatCounter website, and click "Register."

      Enter a user name, your email address, a password and other requested personal details, then tick the box to confirm you accept the terms and conditions, and click "Register My Account."

      Select your time zone from the drop-down menu, and click "Proceed and Add a Project."

      Enter your website name, address and category, select your country from the drop-down menu, click "Next," and click "Configure and Install Code."

      Select a type of counter, and click "Next." Select your Web page editor from the drop-down menu, if it applies, and click "Next."

      Follow the instructions for your Web editor, or right-click anywhere on the code, and click "Copy."

      Log in to the control panel or HTML code of your website, right-click wherever you want to insert the code, select "Paste," and then publish your website. StatCounter will record activity on any page containing the code.

      Log in to StatCounter at any time, click "My Projects," then click the graph icon next to the name of your website to view visitor statistics.

    GoStats

      Go to the GoStats website, and click "Sign Up."

      Enter a user name and password, and your real name and email address. The enter your website name and URL; click "Sign Up."

      Open the confirmation email sent to the address you provided, and left-click at the beginning of the code and drag to the end to highlight. Right-click, and select "Copy."

      Log in to the control panel or HTML code of your website, right-click wherever you want to insert the code, select "Paste," and then publish your website. GoStats will record activity on any page containing the code.

      Log in to GoStats at any time, and click any of the various links under "Attendance," "Links," "Pages," "Systems" and "Visitors" to see specific data about visitors to your website.
