Divorce can mean starting over completely.

Getting divorced can be a challenging time in any man or woman's life. Often times, a divorce means rebuilding financially, moving, dating again, or helping children to adjust to a single- or dual-parent home. However, one can overcome all of these challenges in time and can take steps to ease the transition from married to single life again.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend counseling. Counseling can help you to recover from a traumatic divorce that may have caused significant stress on you. Consequently, it will be important to invite your children to attend counseling as well, since they may have been negatively impacted by the divorce and events leading up to the divorce. Share your feelings and search for ways to positively move on from the experience with your counselor. If you cannot afford standard fees for therapy, seek out assistance from your search or organizations that provide low-cost therapy to individuals and families.

Evaluate your finances and lifestyle. After a divorce, your income may be divided in half. As such, you will need to realistically evaluate your new financial state and what lifestyle changes you will need to make. You will need to ask yourself what steps you will need to take to maintain your current lifestyle or even living more modestly to account for your new household income. You may need to take on another job or find alternate sources of income after a divorce.

Take steps to independence. Married life often includes making decisions for two or yielding to the needs of others. After a divorce, it will be important to take steps that will allow you to gain a sense of independence. Towards this end, you can do things specifically for you to aid in your ability to move on after a divorce. Start saving for a personal vacation, get a new haircut or buy a new outfit. All of these are opportunities to take steps towards independence after a divorce.

Create a support system. A support system consisting of family and friends can help you to make it on your own after a divorce. Organize outings with these individuals in order to build strong relationships outside of your marriage. Going to the movies, a jog, or coffee with others can help you to build connections and get to know others in the effort to create a support system. Alternately, you may also join a support group for new divorcees, which can help you to find others to relate to in the face of divorce.
