How to Rig a Barrel Swivel

How to Rig a Barrel Swivel thumbnail
Barrel swivels help reduce line twist.

Barrel swivels are pieces of terminal fishing tackle that most fishermen use when fishing with a live-bait rig. The swivels, which have a rotating body and holes on both ends, serve a couple of purposes: to reduce line twist and to separate the sinker from the leader of the live-bait rig. Rigging barrel swivels on a live-bait rig involves tying fishing line to both sides of them.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 24- to 36-inch piece of fishing line to be used as the leader. It should be the same breaking strength as the main line.

    • 2

Slide onto the main fishing line a sinker that is heavy enough to maintain contact with the bottom.

    • 3

Tie the barrel swivel to the main line with a Palomar knot (see Resources). Tie the leader to the other side of the swivel.

    • 4

Tie a hook to the other end of the leader.
