Calla lilies are popular flowers at weddings because of their elegant appearance and vibrant colors. The smooth lines and vivid color of the calla lily flower and stem can be enhanced by submerging the flower under water. Submerging calla lilies also makes the flower look larger as it reflects off the water and the glass bowl. You can submerge calla lilies in a clear vase or flat bowl to be used as a centerpiece on reception tables.
Things You'll Need
- Calla lily
- Clear bowl or vase
- Distilled water
Shorten the calla’s stem to 6 to 8 inches long with sharp scissors. Cut the stem at an angle to help the flower stay fresh longer. Long flexible stems can be wrapped around inside a bowl to create a modern look.
Fill the clear bowl or vase 1 inch from the top with distilled water. Tap water will make the water look cloudy and destroy the effect.
Hold the calla by the stem just under the flower. Set the cut end of the stem down into the water along the edge of the bowl or vase. Press the stem down into the water gently. The stem will start to curl around the bowl. Press the flower into the water gently so it rests on top of the curled stem. Hold the flower in place until it fills with water and stays in place.
