If you're dealing with nasty shoe odor, there's one tried-and-true way to get rid of it: with a homemade vinegar solution. Vinegar is great for neutralizing odors and fighting off bacteria. To make your own solution, mix 3 parts water and 1 part white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray this solution inside your shoes. Allow your shoes to fully dry before wearing them again.

Another home remedy to try is baking soda, which also works wonders on odors. Simply sprinkle your slides with a thin layer of baking soda if you notice any weird smells and let it sit overnight.

How to Prevent Odor

While you can't totally prevent pesky smells from forming on your slides, you can take some preventive measures to ensure that they stay as odor-free as possible. Namely, it's important to keep your feet clean and dry. Always allow your feet to fully dry before putting on your slides, as excess moisture will lead to bacterial growth (the culprit behind shoe odor). You can also try leaving your shoes in direct sunlight since UV light deters certain types of fungal and bacterial growth.

How to Clean Your Slides

Can you wash your slides? Of course you can — and you should if you want to keep icky odors at bay — but it's important to do so the right way. Cleaning Adidas slides is different than, say, cleaning smelly leather shoes, and you'll want to ensure that you use the right products.

To clean your slides, first gather a bucket with warm water, laundry detergent (or another mild soap that won't strip the shoe materials), a soft-bristle toothbrush, and a towel. Then follow these steps:

  1. Mix a cap of detergent with warm water in the bucket.
  2. Place your slides in the bucket and leave them there for up to an hour depending on how badly they need to be cleaned.
  3. Use the toothbrush to scrub away any deep-set dirt and/or stains.
  4. Finish by rinsing off the slides in a sink and toweling them dry.
