Sometimes washing clothes can be confusing because you don't want to ruin other clothes by washing them with something soiled. If your clothes have paint on them, you first need to assess the dryness level of the paint. If the paint is solid, you can wash the clothing as normal. If the paint is still wet, you will need to take more steps. Most craft paints are water-soluble, so it isn't too tough to remove them from clothes. You can even remove oil-based paints with just a little effort.
Things You'll Need
- Bristled brush
- Dishwashing detergent
- Paint thinner, rubbing alcohol or turpentine
Determine if the paint stain is from oil-based or water-soluble paint. If the paint is water soluble, wet the item of clothing thoroughly with warm water and apply a few drops of dishwashing detergent to the stain. If the paint stain is oil-based, wet the item thoroughly with warm water and then consult the packaging of the paint to see what paint thinner is recommended for removal. If nothing is recommended, use turpentine or rubbing alcohol. Soak the stain in the thinner and allow it to sit for five minutes.
Scrub the stain with a bristled brush to loosen and dissolve the paint. Rinse with warm water.
Pour more dishwashing detergent over the stain. Do this regardless of whether the pain stain was oil based or water soluble. Scrub with a clean bristled brush to remove any remaining traces of paint. If necessary repeat this step again all paint is gone.
Rinse clean with warm water and add the item of clothing to your next load of laundry and wash as normal.
