How to Fold an American Flag for Display
It is seen as a great mark of respect to a fallen hero for a folded U.S. flag to be displayed in a memorial case at the family home. The folding of the flag has to be performed according to a strict etiquette, since each fold has a deep historical significance. Two people are required to properly fold the American flag as protocol states that it must never be allowed to touch the floor or ground. When properly folded, the flag will fit perfectly into a standard size memorial flag case and can be displayed with pride alongside the veteran's medals.

Stand facing a partner, holding the flag horizontally between you at waist height.

Fold the the flag lengthwise so that the lower striped section covers the blue field and stars.

Fold lengthwise again so the folded edge comes to meet the open edge. This will result in the blue field being visible from both sides and no stripes visible at this end.

Start a triangular fold at the striped end by folding the folded edge of the striped section to meet the open edge. The stripes on the triangle will be perpendicular to the stripes running the length of the flag.

Turn the outer point of the striped section inwards over the perpendicular fold, parallel with the open edge.

Repeat the previous two triangular folds until you reach the end of the flag, resulting in a triangle with only the blue field and stars visible.

Tuck the remaining small section of flag into the top fold to secure the triangle. Place the folded flag into a triangular flag case.
