How to Design Around Burgundy Drapes
Burgundy drapes are often used in rooms equipped with luxurious decor, such as libraries, dens and upscale dining rooms. However, the deep red color of burgundy will bring a sense of warm elegance to any room. When decorating around burgundy drapes, first decide what ambiance you are trying to create. For a conservative look, adorn the walls with a complementary color, such as hunter green. For smaller rooms, choose a lighter shade, such as gold, to provide an airy feel to the room; gold-colored walls highlight the richness of burgundy drapes. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Select flooring that balances out the color scheme. For hardwood floors, install a neutral color that will not distract the eye away from the decor of the room. To reflect light and give the appearance of a larger room, choose carpet colors such as sage green or light tan.
-
2
Choose paint colors for your walls according to the style you want to create. Add warmth to larger rooms by blending your burgundy drapes into your color scheme; choose neutral colors in the same intensity as your drapes, such as dark tan or dark green. To brighten up the room, select a contrasting color, such as light gray. If desired, you can use paint chip cards found at your local paint store to visualize different color combinations.

3
Pair natural wooden furniture with dark-colored walls to create symmetry between dark and light objects. Conversely, accent neutrally colored walls and your burgundy drapes with furniture made of rich, dark wood.

4
Invest in accessories that harmonize with your color scheme. Accent colors that work well with burgundy are tan, green, gray, gold and black. For example, use black picture fames on the wall, pair gold lamps with black lamp shades, or display tan and green accent pillows. Select only two or three main colors to use in your decor to avoid overwhelming a visitor.
-
5
Repeat the color burgundy throughout the room. Place at least three burgundy-colored decorative pieces on opposing sides of the room from the drapes to create color balance.
-
6
Install adequate lighting. Dark, rich colors absorb light, so to counterbalance this effect, illuminate the room. For accent lighting, place a variety of lamps that complement your decor around the room. Additionally, install track lights or spotlights where needed. To provide extra lighting and make your room visually pleasing, use wall sconces as stylish accents.
