How to Strike the Solar Plexus

There are many points on the human body which are considered to be vulnerable. The solar plexus is one of these points. It is a fairly large area full of many nerves. The solar plexus is located just behind the top of the abdomen, right below the sternum. When the solar plexus is hit hard enough, it causes the diaphragm to spasm, which disrupts breathing. A well executed, effective strike to solar plexus can render an opponent defenseless and leave them feeling winded.

Instructions

  1. Striking with Hands or Feet

    • 1

Stand directly in front of your opponent.

    • 2

Spread your legs shoulder width apart with one leg slightly further back than the other. The power of your punch or kick will come from the side of your body with the leg positioned back.

    • 3

Aim for center of your opponents torso, right at the top of their abdomen, just below their sternum (center of the chest). Punch, palm strike or kick them in this area.

    Striking with Your Knee

    • 4

Move in close to your opponent.

    • 5

Spread your legs shoulder width apart with one leg positioned slightly further back than the other.

    • 6

Wrap your hands behind their neck and interlock your fingers.

    • 7

Pull them towards you in a downward motion while simultaneous lunging your knee into their upper abdomen (solar plexus). Knee them with the leg that is positioned further back.

Tips & Warnings

  • The solar plexus is an extremely vulnerable area for an average person, but a well conditioned athlete, such as a trained fighter, will have developed the abdominal muscles covering their solar plexus and be less susceptible to strikes in that area.

  • An accurate blow to the solar plexus has the potential to kill a person, especially someone with weak abdominal muscles.
