How to Record HDTV Signals From Over the Air

How to Record HDTV Signals From Over the Air thumbnail
You can record HD programming with the help of an HD antenna.

If you just set up your new HDTV and are itching to set up the new HD hardware to the device, you have three different options for obtaining HD programming. Cable and satellite providers offer a variety of HD stations (often at an additional price), but you can also receive local HD content over the air with an HD antenna. This does not cost a dime in service fees after you have purchased the equipment. Further, you can record the HD signals with a connected HD DVR.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the HDMI cable running from your HD antenna into the "HDMI In" port on the back of the HD DVR. Third-party HD DVRs that function with antenna connects are available at your local electronics store.

    • 2

Attach an HDMI cable into the "HDMI Out" port on the back of the HD DVR. Plug the free end into one of the "HDMI In" ports on your television.

    • 3

Insert the Ethernet cable into one of the "Out" ports on your high-speed Internet modem, than connect the opposite end into the "WAN" port on your HD DVR. The HD DVR needs an Internet connection in order to receive upcoming programming information; the HD antenna does not provide this.

    • 4

Power on all the equipment. Choose "HDMI" as the input option on your television. This allows you to view the programming of your HD antenna.

    • 5

Press the "Guide" button on the HD DVR's remote control. Use the directional arrow buttons on the remote to scroll through the available stations. Select the show you want and press the "Record" on the remote.
