A new baby means lots of new responsibilities.

When you decide to have a child, there are a countless number of things that you need to do to properly prepare for the arrival of your new family member. However, there are also a lot of things that need to get done after the child has arrived. For example, you need to get your child a Social Security number. If you want to do this quickly, you should do so at the hospital where your child was born.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the information you need to get your child's Social Security number. For a new baby, you should have the Social Security numbers of both parents. In some situations, you can apply without both numbers, such as if the father is unknown or deceased.

    • 2

Wait until the hospital is collecting the information for the child's birth certificate.

    • 3

Answer "yes" when asked if you would like to get a Social Security number for your child. You will be asked this while giving the information for the birth certificate. The hospital will then provide you with the number.

    • 4

Fill out a Form SS-5 if you were not able to get your child's Social Security number at the hospital. You will need to bring this completed form, as well as your child's birth certificate, to your local Social Security office.

Tips & Warnings

  • A Form SS-5 can be used to get a child's Social Security number no matter what age they are.
