How to Do Text-to-Speech on Safari With an iPhone

The iPhone is a mobile phone made by Apple. It has a touch-screen display, and can display pictures and books, and play music and videos. You can shoot pictures and videos with the two built-in cameras, play games and run applications. The iPhone connects to the Internet over cellular data networks as well as Wi-Fi. If you are visually impaired, you can enable VoiceOver to listen to the iPhone read text appearing on web pages when you use the Safari browser.

  • Tap "Settings" from the iPhone's home screen, then tap "General" and then tap "Accessibility."

  • Tap the "VoiceOver" option next to "Triple-Click Home" if you want to be able to toggle VoiceOver on and off by triple-pressing the iPhone's "Home" button. Tap "Toggle VoiceOver," and then tap "Accessibility" to return to the accessibility settings.

  • Tap the VoiceOver "On/Off" switch to "On" to enable VoiceOver. Now the iPhone will say the name of whatever item you tap. When in VoiceOver mode, you need to first tap on an icon to select it, and then VoiceOver reads what you have tapped or touched. Double-tap the selected item to open it, instead of single-tapping it when in regular mode. Flick three fingers across the screen to scroll when in VoiceOver mode, instead of the usual one finger.

  • Press the "Home" button to return to the iPhone's home screen.

  • Tap the "Safari" icon to select it, and then double-tap it to start Safari.

  • Tap the search text field to select it, and then double-tap it to start typing in it. Tap a letter to select it on the keyboard, then double-tap it to type the letter. Continue in this fashion to type in a new URL, and then tap "Go" to select the "Go" command. Double-tap "Go" to load the page. You can also tap on a bookmark from the list that Safari suggests as you type letters, and then double-tap it to load the page.

  • Tap on an area of text in the page, and the iPhone will read it to you.
