You must install a replacement spout that has a diverter in the same position as in the old spout.

In order to fix the problem of a shower and tub's water diverter leaking, you need to replace the water spout where the diverter is housed. The diverter inside the spout wears out over time, as with other wearable parts in the tub's faucet, leaking water when it should be directing all of the water to the shower head. You must replace the spout with one that has the diverter in the same location to ensure that the spout will fit correctly. You must also choose a replacement that attaches to the water pipe in the same manner. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the underside of the tub's spout to see if a set screw is present. If you see a screw, remove it, using an Allen wrench, and then slide the spout off the water pipe.

    • 2

Twist the spout counterclockwise to remove it from the water pipe. Clamp a pipe wrench to the spout if it will not twist by hand, and turn the wrench counterclockwise until the spout comes off the water pipe.

    • 3

Remove the old water pipe by clamping a pipe wrench to it, and then turn it counterclockwise until it comes free. Insert an internal pipe wrench into the pipe if there is not enough pipe protruding to clamp a pipe wrench to, and then clamp the pipe wrench to the internal wrench and twist it counterclockwise.

    • 4

Cover the threads on both ends of the water pipe with plumber's tape, and then twist the pipe into the opening in the wall by turning it clockwise until it sits firmly in place. Seal the gap between the pipe and the wall, using silicone caulk.

    • 5

Install the new spout by either twisting it counterclockwise to thread it onto the pipe, or slide it onto the pipe and tighten the set screw on the underside.
