How to Get the Hammer in "Bowser's Inside Story"
Nintendo released "Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story" for the DS in 2009. Throughout the game, Mario and Luigi gather weapons and learn special attack maneuvers. One of the first pieces of equipment they get is a pair of hammers. These hammers let the brothers attack enemies, and they can also equip them outside of combat, using the hammers as tools to interact with their environment. They find the hammers in the first level of the game, "The Trash Pit."

Proceed through the Trash Pit. The map is linear, and there's only one direction you can go. Halfway through the map, you'll encounter a wooden crate with a hammer logo. The hammer is inside the crate, but you can't open it yet.

Continue forward. The path goes up, and then loops around. After four screens, you'll find yourself directly above the hammer crate. You'll see an Exclamation box floating here.

Hit the Exclamation box. The floor will break away, and Mario and Luigi will fall, landing on the hammer crate. After a brief cutscene, you'll get the hammers.

Tips & Warnings
You can equip the hammers by pushing the "R" button. You then use Mario's hammer by pushing the "A" button and Luigi's hammer by pushing the "B" button. When Mario uses his hammer, he smashes crates and enemies in front of him. When Luigi uses his hammer, he smashes Mario, turning him into mini-Mario. Mini-Mario can squeeze into otherwise inaccessible places.
