How to Manually Change the File Extension in Vista
Windows Vista labels its files with extensions that identify what type of information each file contains. Changing an extension will not change a file's contents, but sometimes extensions are mislabeled or are interchangeable. You can change the extension in Windows Vista using the built-in rename feature once the ability to view extensions has been enabled.
