How to Make a Unicorn Out of Tape

How to Make a Unicorn Out of Tape thumbnail
Unicorns are fanciful horse-like creatures with magical properties.

Unicorns are imaginary animals. In the Middle Ages they were said to favor the company of maidens and to have healing powers. Narwhal horns sometimes were harvested from the marine mammals and sold as unicorn horns. Unicorns remain popular today. Some toymakers create unicorn figurines to sell to children. Unicorns also are a widely used motif for clothing and other items. You can create a unicorn from duct tape, which is durable and easy to work with. Duct tape comes in many bright colors, so you can create color-customized versions of the animal.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a stick figure of a horse out of pipe cleaners. Bend and wrap the wires to create four legs, a back, a neck and a head. Add a rib cage by twisting three or four short pipe cleaner pieces around the back so that they hang down evenly on either side of the body. Curve these ribs slightly inward.

    • 2

Loosely wrap duct tape over the skeleton to create the muscle structure. Do not wrap the duct tape too tightly; if you do your finished project will look like a stick figure. Ball up small pieces of duct tape to create the stomach, flank and neck muscles. Scrunch up pieces of duct tape for other muscles. Keep doing this until your unicorn looks like a fleshed-out horse.

    • 3

Add a layer of duct tape skin. This layer should be tight and flat. Wrap short pieces of tape over the muscle layer. Completely cover the unicorn with tight duct tape. Curve, bend and tuck the tape wherever necessary to make the unicorn look realistic. You can add more than one layer of duct tape skin if necessary.

    • 4

Roll a small piece of duct tape into a tapered cone. Tape the cone to your unicorn's forehead. This is the unicorn's horn, which differentiates your unicorn from regular duct tape horses. You can add a tail and mane by applying short pieces of yarn on the unicorn's rear and along its neck.
