How to Open Grado Labs SR 80 Headphones

How to Open Grado Labs SR 80 Headphones thumbnail
Many headphone problems start at the jack, not the drivers.

The drivers in Grado headphones, which produce the sound you hear, are enclosed in plastic or metal housing that is glued shut. The shape of the drivers' housing also prevents you from getting good leverage to open it, making it difficult to work on them. A simple trick can help you out.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the ear pads from the headphones.

    • 2

Set the headphones down on a large work surface with the grilles facing upward.

    • 3

Set the blow dryer to high heat and turn it on. Aim it at the sides of the plastic housing, keeping them at least 4 inches apart. Heat them for at least two minutes.

    • 4

Twist the two ends of the housing. It should separate easily. If it doesn't, heat the housing for another minute and try again.
