How to Pull a Coin Out of Thin Air

Efficiency with coin tricks relies on sleight-of-hand skills, namely palming.

Many magic tricks rely on sleight of hand and misdirection to create a successful illusion. While sleight-of-hand tricks can impress your audience, the skill requires a lot of practice to master. One of the staples of sleight-of-hand tricks is palming coins to pull money out of thin air. With the right procedure, skills, showmanship and a little bit of flourish, this magic trick is a snap to pull off and can be performed with individual style.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a coin in the palm of your hand. Nestle it against the butt of the palm, between the meaty part underneath the thumb and the muscle along the bottom of the palm underneath the pinkie finger.

    • 2

Grasp the coin between the muscles at the butt of the palm. You can do this by moving the thumb and the pinkie finger. Do this with as little movement of the fingers as possible. This is called palming, and is an essential part of the trick.

    • 3

Move the hand holding the coin to make it appear as if you are dropping the coin into the other hand. Keep the coin secure in the palm.

    • 4

Close the empty hand, where the coin is supposed to be. Use a gesture of your choosing to make it appear as if you are vanishing the coin with magic, such as shaking the empty hand.

    • 5

Open the empty hand. The coin will appear to have vanished by magic. You can then make the hidden coin "materialize" with flourish, making it seem as if you pulled a coin out of thin air.
