How to Change the BlackBerry Browser Setting to Internet Explorer

While BlackBerry devices are powerful tools for email access and messaging, their Web-browsing capabilities are not always on par with their iPhone and Android cousins. Because of this, some websites may discriminate against your device when attempting to access them. Because these sites detect that you are using an unsophisticated browser, they may instead prompt you to access them from a computer -- even though your BlackBerry may technically be capable of rendering the site. To get around this, users can activate a special Internet Explorer emulation mode that may allow them to browse the site anyway.

  • Press the "Menu" button from the home screen. Scroll to and select the Internet browser icon.

  • Press the "Menu" button, and select "Options."

  • Scroll down and select "Emulation Mode." By default, this setting will be set to "BlackBerry." Scroll through the list of options, and select "Microsoft IE."

  • Access a website that requires Internet Explorer to confirm that emulation is working correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even though the emulation mode has been changed, some banking websites may still fail to function. This is due to compatibility issues between mobile Web browsers and security encryption protocols. Check BlackBerry App World to see if your banking institution has an application that can be used to access your information instead.
