While you can post short messages about any topic on the social media service Twitter, you can also hold structured conversations with multiple users. It is also possible to capture the conversation or a group of related tweets in an organized fashion. Twitter and third-party apps provide ways to archive these conversations.
If you want to begin a conversation thread among multiple people about a specific subject, create a unique hashtag topic, an abbreviation or phrase related to a topic preceded by the pound sign. For example, fans of Kansas State University’s men’s basketball team use the hashtag #KStateMBB for discussions. When your Twitter followers and others make a comment about the topic in their status updates and include the hashtag, it will make it easy for you to find the comments using the Twitter search tool. You can use the Twitter embed feature to add the tweets to a page on your website for a recap of the conversation.
Twitter Tools and Third-Party Programs
The Twitter-owned free application Tweetdeck includes a feature that enables you to create a custom timeline of tweets. When you sign in to Tweetdeck and select the "+" sign on the home screen, select the “Collections” option. You can add specific tweets to your custom timeline and embed the timeline on your website. You can use Tweetdeck via the Web or download a desktop version for Windows computers or Macs.
Free third-party Web-based apps that enable you to capture Twitter conversations include Storify and Chirpstory. Both apps enable you to search for tweets by user or hashtag and create a custom timeline. You can organize the tweets in any order, plus add images, links and text. You can also embed timelines on your website or share a link to it via Twitter.
