How to Style a TWA

How to Style a TWA thumbnail
Wear your TWA with confidence.

Highly textured hair worn at a length of three inches or less is referred to as a teenie weenie afro (TWA). Typically, this style is worn when a woman cuts off all of her relaxed or damaged hair and wears it in it's natural state. Many women are reluctant to do such a big chop due to limited styling options, but with some creativity, there are several styles that will add variety and chicness to the TWA. Does this Spark an idea?

Purchase headbands and scarves to accessorize your outfit. These items can complement your look and liven up your TWA. Smooth the front of your hair back with your hands (avoid using a brush to prevent thinning and breakage around the hairline) or for a smoother look, use a small amount of hair gel to help lay down the edges of the hair near the temple. Place the headband or scarf over your head and slide it back in the direction of the hair. Adjust the band for comfort, then finger comb the back of the hair. Headbands and scarves come in a variety of styles, patterns and material and can be found at most beauty supply and department stores. If you are a do-it-yourself kind of lady, you can even make your own.

Twist your hair. Twists are not only stylish, but they also add length and volume to your tresses. Two-strand twists are the most popular style worn with the TWA. Take a section of hair and separate it into equal halves. Twist each strand around the other (repeating left side over right side), until you reach the end of the hair. The less hair you use for each section, the smaller the twists will be. For a uniformed look, neatly part hair into small grid-like squares. This style may be worn for up to two weeks. Unravel and gently separate the hair to wear the "twist-out" style. For a more natural looking twist-out, do not part the hair before twisting. Accessorize with a headband or scarf.

Create the faux hawk for a edgy look. The faux hawk is worn like a mohawk without shaving the sides of the hair. Braid, twist or pin up both sides of the hair to create a mohawk. Finger comb the loose hair and lift with a small hair pick. Add barrettes and clips to accessorize the look. The faux hawk can be worn on freshly washed hair or with a twist-out.
