Enter an ROTC program. The Reserve Officer Training Course (ROTC) program offers two-, three- and four-year scholarships for nursing students. Generally, you will be obligated to serve in the Army for as many years as your scholarship pays for. To qualify for ROTC, you have to be a U.S. Citizen between the ages of 17 and 27, and have a high school diploma. If you are already in college, you need a minimum 2.5 college GPA. To apply for ROTC, contact your academic adviser.

Attend the Nurse Summer Training Program. This is a mandatory three-week program that introduces ROTC cadets to the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) and the experience of being an Army nurse. The Army assigns cadets to hospitals throughout the United States and Germany--and they will pay your expenses. During the program, you will work under an experienced nurse to strengthen your clinical skills.

Meet Army requirements. You will be practicing nursing, but you will also be a soldier. As such, there are physical requirements you must meet. You must be no older than 30 years old when you graduate nursing school. In addition, you must pass a medical physical, undergo a background check and pass the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). The APFT consists of three sections: push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile run. There are different minimum standards based on age and sex.
