How to Wire a Car for Towing

When towing a car, it's important that you wire the towing vehicle's rear lights so that they are displayed on the towed vehicle's lights. This requires a tow bar and a wiring kit to make sure that the electricity is moving properly through the system. Even when you're using a simple 12N connector that has only seven color-coded pins, it's important that you hook up the connector properly and test it to be sure it works.

Check the tow bar cable. The cable should be color coded in the socket with yellow as one, blue as two, white as three, green as four, brown as five, red as six and black as seven. Take the plug from the car to be towed and plug it into the socket. Make sure that the pins all line up with number and color of the socket and push it in firmly.

    • 3

Turn on the car that will be doing the towing and check the lights on the car being towed. You need to be sure that the lights on the rear car are properly displaying your turn signals, running lights and brake lights before you tow it anywhere.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some cars may not have a plug already installed into the electrical system that you can plug into the 12N socket. In these cases you will need to have a plug professionally installed.
